Adamowski tops 2017 list of Norwalk salaries

NORWALK, Conn. – Norwalk Superintendent of Schools Steven Adamowski easily tops the list of Norwalk salaries in 2017.

Adamowski earned $254,998.92 in 2017, according to a list released Wednesday by Norwalk Comptroller Frederic Gilden. Second on the list is Norwalk Police Officer Javier Mogollon, who earned $207,483.67.

Norwalk Police Officer Russell Ouellette earned $201,234.99. Officer David Nieves earned $200,016.75.

Norwalk Police officers earn money above their base salaries by taking extra duty assignments for private companies and by putting in overtime for the city. The city gets a 15 percent administrative fee for every hour of extra duty worked by police officers, Sgt. David Orr has said. Common Council members have said that overtime actually saves the city money as the price of benefits is high and there is a need to cover emergencies. Overtime doesn’t count toward an officer’s pension and is often paid for by federal funds, asset forfeiture funds or state funds, officials have said.

There are seven police officers in the top 10. In fact, the top 49 earners are either police officers or Norwalk Public Schools employees.

Norwalk Finance Director Bob Barron is 50 on the list, earning $163,822.75.

When will you be putting up the full list of salaries for every City of Norwalk employee? Was that not released yet?
It’s always good to see exactly where all the dollars are going, and who is earning them.

Is the public interest served by the notable increase of public school administrator salaries in recent years and increased salaries over $200k ? High property taxes and our depressed real estate market for many years argue for public school salary restraint. Not acceleration of ever higher salaries. So far no evidence of significant improved performance of our students has emerged to buttress our sharply higher public school administrator salaries.

State funds are drying up , hope the council members have a plan B or should they be asked again their position on this.The taxpayers deserve a current here and now assessment on this don’t they?

Maybe its time to roll up some sleeves and do some work on this if we are relying on one thought by a handful of people with our tax dollar.

New malls require an increase of 20% percent by most forces, has Norwalk planned on this? Has anyone told the council a new mall is being built yet ?

Maybe Nancy could keep up this salary posting for several weeks to let as many taxpayers and businesses as possible understand how the City is managed and why their property taxes are punitive. Maybe the BOE Chair, BET Chair, CC Chair and Mayor could respond.

I am still trying to figure out what Ralph Valenzisi does. He is #8. That’s quite a salary for someone who has no contact with students. What does he do?

It should be noted that the taxpayer is footing the bill for these private companies in the form of higher construction contracts and higher utility rates with cop’s vs flagmen. So ultimately, the taxpayer is on the hook for every penny of this waste.

What , Sgt. David Orr has failed to say is every penny of the fee and more is spent on the administrative costs and the cost of an extra fleet of police cars with city gas and repairs, and city insurance , for the extra fleet of police cars so the cops can have the privilege of overtime.

If this were the case, I would say it is time to cut benefits.

Norwalk had an opportunity to fix this out of control police overtime from dirt jobs but the pro union hacks Kimmel and Melendez sided with the police union instead of the taxpayer and pushed not to use flagmen at great savings and no city car and no city gas. Flagmen would actually create a safer environment vs cops, as the flagmen would actually be directing traffic unlike the cops who are sitting in the car playing on their iPhone or talking with the construction workers and not directing traffic.

Amazing how the required education for a six-figure salary in Norwalk is only a GED. In addition, to make matters worse it seems that police departments want to hire candidate with the lowest IQ

At the November 18 POCD visioning workshop led by Stantec, participants were told the city had 1800 people on the payroll. The actual number is closer to 4000. Does this list include everyone? It sure looks like it given the long list of poll workers rounding out the bottom end of the payroll.

To save time, the city should release a list of taxpayers who aren’t on the payroll.

Nancy Chapman, could you investigate whether Adamowski’s salary noted here includes his annuity and bonus to stay thee years? If not, what is his actual salary, including the bonus and annuity? Does anyone else at central office get annuities?

Forgive my ignorance in advance, because I’m unfamiliar with contracts and the like.
I’ve noticed that there a lot of non-classroom teachers at the top of their school lists. In particular, I recognize some gym teachers names, etc. that make more than the teachers who teach things like reading and writing an math.
Do gym teachers- or whatever non-classroom teachers- have the same union and rates etc. that classroom teachers have. Why are they getting paid so much?
Some of these guys are making over $120 thousand per year?
I’m sure thy are good at there jobs, but to make much more than most classroom teachers doesn’t seem logical.
Wow, I should have their jobs!

It is absolutely DISGUSTING that these glorified overpaid ditch watchers called “police” people “earn” this amount of money doing menial work that should be parcelled out to nonunion workers. I agree with Donald, this is a travesty beyond comprehension.

When you drive past these “workers” and they are either:
1) in their cars on their phones
2) staring at the workers in the ditch
or
3) leaning up against their cars playing on their phones
and there are lines of cars approaching cones with no direction from “them” WHATSOEVER and you are looking to them for guidance and guess what you get… a look from them that equals “what?! Why are you bothering me?” to “what do you want me to do?” stupid looks.

I think EVERY citizen should pull over and start videoing these moochers on their cell phones and present it to the mayor, police commissioner and common council… that should end their gravy train.

The highest paid principal in Norwalk is $189k. $254k is a big jump from that. Is there some reason for that?

I guess $254k a year is still low if you compare to nearby towns.

Nancy Chapman, can I assume you are working on my request? I asked about Adamowski’s total salary, including annuities and bonus. I also asked for anyone else who receives annuities at central office. Thank you for your consideration of this matter.

To answer your question, all certified teachers in Norwalk are part of the NFT, so yes, it’s the same union.
It doesn’t matter if you teach Honors Calculus, basic science, or gym. You get the same salary, based on experience.
The reason why you see so many gym teachers ( and other non-homeroom teachers on here) as some of the highest paid, is because many of them also coach to supplement their income. This is included in the total you see. Also, many people also teach summer school or do summer programs. In addition, there are several extra jobs teachers can pick up either before or after school.
I’m not saying it’s right, but I’m just telling you how it works.
I know several Norwalk teachers and a few in other districts too. Some do much more than just teach from 8-2 or whatever their hours are.

Marj, NPS Communications Director Brenda Wilcox Williams tells me that Dr. Adamowski’s 2017 intake, listed in the story, includes his salary and bonus.

“It doesn’t include an annuity,” she said in an email. “He does not have an annuity under the new contract, and annuities for the senior management team have also been eliminated with the expiration of contracts.”

She continued, “School administrators are compensated under TRB and do not receive annuities.”
