NPS accepting applications for BMHS Healthcare Academy

NORWALK, Conn. – This is a press release, presented in the format in which it was sent:

The lottery application for the McMahon Healthcare Academy is now live. The program, which offers students the ability to earn health certifications through a partnership with Norwalk Community College (NCC) and Norwalk Hospital, is now accepting 50 rising grade 9 students, including 10 who will be selected from across the district. Those chosen via the lottery system will be enrolled as full time Brien McMahon students and will graduate with a Brien McMahon diploma as long as they remain in the program.

Students who participate in the McMahon Healthcare Academy can earn certification, which will enable them to secure jobs after graduation such as an Emergency Medical Technicians, Phlebotomy Assistants and Patient Care Technicians.

The Academy is an approved school for the Biomedical Science pathway for which all students will take the three-course sequence as part of their experience in the program with the opportunity to earn college credit in these areas. They will also gain membership in Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA), a national organization of future healthcare professionals.

Students enrolled in the Academy will engage in a rich integrated curriculum, and will have access to authentic experiences including fieldwork across a number of healthcare disciplines. Students in grade 9 and 10 will participate in field experiences at NCC. Juniors and seniors will take classes in the evening at NCC. Concurrently with required science classes, students will be following the 3-course Biomedical Science sequence of Project Lead The Way.

Entrance into the McMahon Healthcare Academy is by lottery application only. The deadline to apply is March 31.
