Shout Out to all those who participated in April’s Norwalk ACTS Social Emotional Convening. As part of our collective work to ensure the success of all Norwalk children, Norwalk ACTS and the Norwalk Public Schools District Wellness Committee hosted a community convening focused on the social-emotional needs of our city’s children – recognizing that social-emotional learning impacts a child’s ability to achieve and thrive academically, and their long term success in life. The purpose of the convening was to continue the work in creating a system of support in our community, from enrichment to intervention, to best meet these social-emotional needs.
One outcome from the convening was defining a framework that will be used for the initiative, which will include two Working Groups:
1) The Social-Emotional Learning Working Group, led by Mary Kate Locke – Family & Children’s Agency, will be focusing on the prevention and enrichment side of this work, building social-emotional competencies (i.e. – self-awareness, self-management, relationship skills) and mental wellness for children, and mapping the resources available both in school and in out of school time.
2) The Mental Health Working Group, led by Marissa Mangone – Mid-Fairfield Child Guidance, will be focused on mapping the mental health services that exist in the schools and in the community, examining capacity and alignment of resources that promote mental wellness and support mental illness, and looking at a process to streamline referrals across Norwalk so we become more efficient in connecting children to access to care.
