This week’s Shout Out was suggested by City of Norwalk Early Childhood Coordinator Mary Oster, who would like to acknowledge the Raising Readers Parent Book Club.  Ten families of students from Columbus Magnet and Fox Run Schools who completed the Raising Readers program celebrated this week with a visit and tour of Norwalk Public Library’s Children’s Department.

Raising Readers is a program that encourages parents to read aloud daily with young children in their home language; introduces high-quality children’s books and promotes family engagement to support children’s literacy. Families build home libraries by receiving a free book each time they attend a weekly workshop.

Collaborating partners are the United Way of Coastal Fairfield County, the Norwalk Early Childhood Council, the Fox Run Family Resource Center (FRC), and Norwalk Public School staff.  Workshops are held in English and Spanish over eight sessions. Since 2012, the collaboration has provided the program to more than 350 Norwalk families.
