Opinion: NPS students to attend National History Day conference

Fostering a healthy spirit for competition inspires students to do their best, while providing valuable skills that will serve them well throughout many aspects of their lives. Throughout the school year, NPS students participated in a variety of academic competitions including Invention Convention, the National Geographic State Bee, NPS district STEM Expo and National History Day. Participation in these events represent the district’s commitment to providing rigorous learning opportunities.

National History Day is a program for students in grades 6-12 that encourages exploration of local, state, national and world history. After participating in a regional competition, selected NPS students went back in time at the state National History Day competition at Central Connecticut State University. They wowed judges with works ranging from a documentary on Vincent Van Gogh’s art and mental state to a website on the cancer cure that causes cancer, and the mystery behind the 1918 Spanish flu pandemic.

Following the state competition, three Ponus Ridge Middle School students qualified to move on to the national History Day competition in June at the University of Maryland.

The Board of Education would like to recognize these students this evening.

Additionally, we’d like to thank their dedicated teacher, Ms. Nealon, who has continued to support this group throughout the process.

Ponus Ridge Middle School Students:

  • Sandra Andronic
  • Mia Schlager
  • Camila Chaves

Your hard work, perseverance and genuine interest in learning about the past to create a better future has made our district proud. We wish you luck as you represent Norwalk Public Schools at the competition!
