NORWALK, Conn. – A two car accident closed one side of the Merritt Parkway Thursday afternoon and sent both drivers to Norwalk Hospital, the Norwalk Fire Department said.
A Subaru Outback heading south left the road and hit a GMC pickup truck on the northbound side of the parkway, just beyond entrance 40, at about 12:45 p.m., Deputy Chief Ed Prescott said in a press release. The Subaru came to rest against the center median guardrail. The pickup was across both of the northbound lanes, he said.
The man driving the pickup, who was alone, was pinned inside by the driver’s door and dashboard, Prescott said. Firefighters worked for 15 minutes to extricate him.
The woman driving the Subaru was boarded and collared as a precaution and removed from the passenger side of her vehicle, Prescott said. She, too, was alone in her vehicle. Both drivers were talking to firefighters and Norwalk Hospital Paramedics at the scene, but were transported for further evaluation to the Hospital.
The northbound side of the parkway was closed until 1:35 p.m. Connecticut State Police remained on scene to investigate the accident.
Two ambulances, a fire engine and a rescue and command car responded to the accident.
