Connelly promises to continue Rivera’s good work for Norwalk Public Schools

NORWALK, Conn. – Norwalk’s latest superintendent of schools has a message for the community.

“The interim in front of my title does not mean I am just warming the seat,” James Connelly said at Tuesday’s Board of Education meeting. “I have always taken the position that an interim superintendent is as accountable and active as a permanent superintendent. I just want to assure the community and assure the Board that interim is there; it doesn’t mean stop, it doesn’t mean coast, to me it means continuing what the district needs to be doing and that’s continuing the initiatives that (started under former Norwalk Superintendent of Schools Manny Rivera.)”

Connelly officially started his work here Monday after a two-week period of becoming familiar with the district as a consultant under Rivera.

“I really have to commend the Board of Education for developing this two-week period,” Connelly said. “As you know, I have been in a lot of interim positions. This is the first time that I have had this comprehensive of a transition period. I think that goes to what the board is trying to do with this period, that is to continue the continuity.”

Deputy Superintendent Tony Daddona has been very helpful, teaching him about the institutional history and relationships, he said.

Connelly said he will be very visible in the schools and will be reaching out to the stakeholders.

“My coming in here is not to start a whole new regime, but rather to continue the initiatives, the partnerships and the good work the district is doing,” Connelly said. “I think that is very important. I see my role here as continuity. I see my role here as a bridge between Dr. Rivera and whoever you select as the new superintendent in the late spring, so all these things don’t stop. I just want to make it very, very clear that I am committed to work with you as a community and with the staff in making sure that there are no hiccups to these initiatives that this community has endorsed. They are not just Dr. Rivera’s initiatives, they are the community’s initiatives.”
