Duff, Rilling request meeting with state on Rowayton Ave. project

The Rowayton Avenue widening project has been pulled from the Norwalk Common Council's agenda for Tuesday night's meeting.

NORWALK, Conn. – A resolution authorizing the mayor to enter into an agreement to proceed with a controversial project to lower and widen Rowayton Avenue around the Rowayton Train Station has been pulled from tonight’s Common Council agenda at the request of Mayor Harry Rilling.

“As the new mayor, I am getting up to speed on various projects around our city and it is important that I have all of the information before making an authorization to proceed,” Rilling said in a press release issued by state Sen. Bob Duff’s office. “After all, once it is done, this will be with us for generations.”

Duff and Rilling have requested a meeting with the state Department of Transportation to clarify the details of the project, the release said.

“There is concern from Rowayton residents about additional truck traffic with this project and I want to ensure that we are working on the residents’ behalf,” Duff said. “Let’s get it right.”

Council Minority Leader John Igneri (D-District E) thanked Duff and Rilling for getting involved.

“I want to thank Sen. Duff and Mayor Rilling for listening to the concerns of Rowayton residents,” Igneri said.”Ultimately, this may move forward, so it is always helpful to have a dialogue with the state and make sure that we are doing everything possible to protect the character of Rowayton.”

Thank you Harry and Bob for getting involved. I for one do not know a soul in Rowayton who wants this. It took many years to ban truck traffic through town, we do not need more truck traffic on our narrow streets, many without sidewalks, by allowing the Rowayton Avenue project to proceed. The Governor as well should look into this matter.

  2. Geez Duff,
Can’t get ahead on the NEON situation so I take it you will come out guns ablazing for the glory of the Rowaytonites. Sooo TYPICAL Duff.

    What?! No photo op?!?!?!

  3. Just really understood what Igneri is saying when he stated “Ultimately, this may move forward…”

Translation: it is a done deal and this is all just PR for Rilling to make him look like a defeated hero.

East Norwalkers should pay very close attention to this. These issues will be exactly the same with respect to the East Avenue projects to lower the road and widen the MetroNorth bridge near the East Norwalk MetroNorth station. The rights of way agreement with the state was VOTED DOWN by the public works committee (unlike that of Rowayton).

It will be interesting if Rilling gets to see the correspondence between the City and the State on this project and figures out who was lying. The State DOT will probably be happy to save the money this project will cost.

What do you mean by “gets to see”? Rilling has all the right and the ability to read the correspondence between the City and the State on this project.

But what WILL be interesting to read if Rilling discloses anything about it. I’m sure he will, since he that type of a transparent administrator…
