NORWALK, Conn. — Former state Rep. Fred Wilms announced his candidacy Friday for Connecticut State Treasurer, pledging to bring fiscal discipline and transparency to the office.
Wilms, a longtime financial executive and Norwalk resident, said he would focus on reforming the state’s underfunded pension system, reducing debt, and increasing accountability.
“Connecticut families manage their money with discipline and common sense; we should expect the same from our government,” Wilms said in a statement. “As Treasurer, I’ll be a watchdog for taxpayers. It’s time we put results before politics.”
Wilms currently serves as a senior vice president at a Connecticut bank, where he has worked with more than 700 small and mid-sized businesses. He previously served two terms in the Connecticut House of Representatives and was part of the team that helped pass the first Republican-approved budget in over 30 years.
According to his campaign, the budget implemented fiscal guardrails, bolstered the Rainy Day Fund, and advanced pension reforms.
Locally, Wilms chaired Norwalk’s Board of Estimate and Taxation during the Great Recession, maintaining a AAA bond rating while holding down taxes.
He holds an MBA in finance from the University of Michigan and a bachelor’s degree in economics from Northwestern University.
