Heavy metal: Steel, iron unions endorse Mangiacopra for Norwalk mayor

NORWALK – Norwalk Democratic mayoral hopeful Vinny Mangiacopra has picked up two more union endorsements — Iron Workers Local 424 and the Sheet Metal Workers Local 38 — according to a press release from the Mangiacopra campaign.

Both unions have made financial contributions to Mangiacopra’s campaign and have pledged to help with volunteer support, the release said.

The two unions become the third and fourth to announce their support for Mangiacopra. The electrical workers (IBEW Local 488) and the painters (IUPAT District Council 11) endorsed Mangiacopra in April.

The release quoted union officials regarding the endorsements:

“We are confident that Mr. Mangiacopra’s experience in economic development will help put Norwalk’s economy back on track and lead to more jobs for our hard working men and women,” said Jim Doheny, business manager for Iron Workers Local 424.

“Vinny is a strong leader and we trust him to look out for the working, middle class families of Norwalk,” said John Tarr, business manager for the Sheet Metal Workers Local 38. “His credentials in the public and private sector are exactly what we need bring quality jobs back to Norwalk. We are excited to endorse his campaign and do what we can to help him win.”

Mangiacopra is District D Democratic Chairman and runs his own communications firm, The Preferred Group LLC. He holds a masters degree in city management from the University of New Haven and a bachelor’s degree from Sacred Heart University.

Union endorsements don’t, unfortunately, carry the weight they once did, but can be a big help when the same unions supply considerable volunteer help. Vinny may do a lot better than the so-called experts predict.
