HARTFORD, Conn. – Election regulators approved a $1.35 million public campaign financing grant for Republican gubernatorial candidate John McKinney and his running mate, David Walker, during a meeting Wednesday.

McKinney, the state senate minority leader, is running in a primary race against 2010 Republican nominee Tom Foley, who was endorsed by party delegates in May. Foley’s application for public financing was approved two weeks ago.

With the deadline for funding for the primary looming at 5 p.m. Friday, neither incumbent state Rep. Chris Perone (D-137) nor state Rep. challenger Warren Pena (D-140) have been granted state funds. Perone submitted his finance package for the funding Wednesday, showing $7,890 in individual contributions total and $4,849.99 on hand.

$1.35 million in state funding to run for governor? If David Watts hears those numbers he will immediately start forming an “exploratory committee” for the next gubernatorial cycle.
