Latinos would gain from participating in Norwalk politics

According to DataUSA, the racial mix of Norwalk’s population is 52% white, 27% Latino, and 14% Black. Sixteen percent of residents are not US citizens, making Norwalk a de facto sanctuary city. Demographers have long forecast Norwalk becoming a Latino-dominant city.

Latinos reportedly own over 200 local small businesses and are increasingly becoming homeowners in Norwalk — a city with 40% renters.  There are real prospects for Norwalk to become a Latino-dominant middle-class city with most becoming homeowners and participating in a vigorous locally-owned small business community, just like Norwalk was three or four decades ago, when its white citizens mostly were homeowners with hundreds of locally owned businesses.

So the obvious question is why Latinos are not a major force in local politics.  If Latinos are inheriting Norwalk they have everything to gain by seeking to control city spending that is eroding property values, discouraging home ownership and discouraging local small business formation.

Clearly the writer of this letter has no idea what he is talking about. The term “sanctuary city” deals with people that are here illegally. Just because someone is not a citizen does bot make them illegal. We have many ways to welcome non citizens legally such as many types visas and green cards.

Also you state “Demographers have long forecast Norwalk becoming a Latino-dominant city.”. I have never heard or read this from anyone but you. Please post a link to back up your claim.

The Latino community is the up and coming community here locally. Like the Italians and Portuguese and others before them, they come work hard sacrifice, buy homes and start small business’s. They are the future in our community. They are family oriented, close nit, god fearing and we should welcome them every chance we get and open our doors to them politically. I hope that many would flock to the Republican Party. Their presence would be welcome. We also need their ideas, and youth. I for one would be willing to sit down anytime to help them in the process.

I think the writer brings up a good question, certainly more worthy of debate than snark.
