NCC’s Kathryn Senie completes leadership program

NORWALK, Conn. (August 9, 2017) – Kathryn C. Senie, EdD, Director of Institutional Advancement & Strategic Planning at Norwalk Community College, completed the 2017 Higher Education Resource Services (HERS) Institute at the University of Denver, June 19 – July 1. Senie joined 67 women leaders from across the United States and Canada to participate in the intensive, residential leadership development program.

For over 40 years, the HERS Institute has prepared women faculty, staff and administrators for leadership roles in higher education. At each of the HERS Institute locations – University of Denver, Bryn Mawr College, or Wellesley College – participants gain the knowledge and skills needed to lead change on their campus and positively affect higher education. The participants selected for this year’s cohort represent institutions across the U.S and one representing the University of Alberta.

Institute sessions included: Inclusive Excellence and Identity; Managing and Leading Change: Your Role in Re-inventing Higher Education; Reframing Organizational Cultures; and Fundraising, Philanthropy and Leadership; and Communications and Negotiation.

Faculty and guest speakers included: HERS Institute Alumna Jennifer Buckwalter, Assistant Dean for Community and Student Engagement, Wright State University; Core Faculty Member Estela López, Former Interim Provost and Senior Vice President of the Board of Regents for Higher Education Connecticut State Colleges and Universities System; Kathy Rogers, Vice President & General Counsel, Simmons College; and former Antioch University Seattle President Dr. Cassandra Manuelito-Kerkvliet.

“The HERS faculty, speakers, staff and participants are incredibly accomplished women dedicated to the multiple purposes of higher education; teaching, scholarship and service. Not only do they seek to expand their professional experience and expertise, but they are committed to the success of all students and the distinct missions of their institutions,” said Senie. She has served as the Director of Institutional Advancement & Strategic Planning since 2000.

Senie is responsible for managing the Department of Institutional Effectiveness as well as supporting the administration, faculty and staff in securing state, federal and private grants. She also coordinates strategic planning and serves at the College’s accreditation liaison with NEASC (New England Association of Schools and Colleges). Senie has been involved in Shared Governance through the College Senate, the Planning and Budget Committee, and the Committee for Diversity and Inclusion. Prior to her work in higher education, she served in local government as an Assistant Corporation Counsel, City Clerk and Assistant to the Mayor of Norwalk, Connecticut. She has a Doctorate of Education from Johnson & Wales University, a Juris Doctorate from the University of Bridgeport, School of Law, and a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Connecticut.
