NEON offering help with tax returns, energy assistance and health care registration

NORWALK, Conn. – Norwalk Economic Opportunity Now (NEON) is no longer providing Head Start and some other programs, but the social service agency is continuing to offer some key services to local residents.

Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) assistance: The March 31 deadline for enrolling in the federal insurance program is approaching, and NEON’s In-Person Assister program provides hands-on assistance to uninsured individuals seeking health insurance coverage via Connecticut’s Health Insurance Exchange, AccessHealthCT.com, during the crucial initial open enrollment time frame and the first year of Health Insurance Exchange operations. To avoid tax penalties all citizens and residents must enroll in a health insurance program by March 31, 2014. Call 203-451-4884 (Se habla Espanol) or 203-434-2378 to make an appointment.

Fuel bill assistance: NEON’s Energy Assistance program helps income-eligible people who have difficulty paying the cost of heating their home by providing vendor payments for home heating, through an intake and assessment process. The application deadline for home heating oil assistance is Monday, March 17. The application deadline for electric, natural gas and other energy bills is May 1. Call 203-663-7337 for an appointment.

Free tax return assistance: The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program is an IRS program designed to help low- and moderate-income taxpayers complete their annual federal tax returns at no cost. The program helps clients take advantage of valuable tax credits, such as the Earned Income Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit, Education Credits and Child Day Care Credits. Call 203-663-7337 to make an appointment. Walk-ins welcome Mondays and Wednesdays 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Customers must be signed in for services no later than 7 p.m.

It has been published in The Hour that the Norwalk Health Department will help people sign up for health care. Please let everyone know this, too.
