NORWALK, Conn. — Nearly fifty donors attended Nancy’s Night Out Thursday at Calf Pasture Beach, a turnout that Chapman Hyperlocal Media Board Chair Bob Welsh described as among the best ever.

“NancyOnNorwalk readers slurped oysters, heard jazz, and had fun while supporting local journalism that shines a light on our community,“ Welsh said.

“In a changing media and business environment, reader donations are essential for non-profit news organizations to continue promoting transparency, accountability, and responsiveness in local government,” he said.

Clyde Ripka, owner of Ripka’s at the Beach, provided wood-fired pizzas and a raw bar featuring Norwalk oysters. Mike Camacho and friends played jazz from the Great American Songbook. Nature provided sea breezes, relaxing views and a great sunset.

A silent auction included a Norwalk Islands sunset sail, a family cruise to Sheffield Island, an enormous bottle of wine, and the chance to be married by Board Member John Levin, or have him “drive your drunk {posterior} home.”

Welsh announced during brief remarks that NancyOnNorwalk has been accepted for membership in the Institute for Non-profit News (INN), which provides education and business support services to member nonprofit news organizations.

“We have already benefited from the advice of INN personnel and we are looking forward to participating in INN’s NewsMatch 2018 nationwide fundraising program in November and December,” Welsh said afterwards.

During NewsMatch, new or increased monthly subscriptions will be matched on a 12:1 basis, and one-time donations will be matched on a 1:1 basis with a maximum match of $1,000 per donor, Welsh said.

Welsh thanked Chapman Hyperlocal Media Board Member Dede Farnsworth for organizing Nancy’s Night Out, and thanked volunteer John Moeling for originating the name and writing promotional copy.  He also touted Board Member Claire Schoen’s new reader engagement campaign, and welcomed new board members Steve Mann and Gerry Werner.

More than eighty percent of NancyOnNorwalk’s funding comes from reader donations.  If you’ve supported NoN recently, thank you. Otherwise please click here now to donate:

This was great fun. The photo’s can’t convey how warm it was Thursday night – but Ripka’s bar serves some delicious frozen cocktails. Clybe Ripka – thanks for your generous support. And thank you NoN supporters, and Bob Welsh for leading this effort!

@John Levin – ditto squared. It was sweaty hot – but still an enjoyable gathering. Nice to have met some of the faces that belong to the names. Bob Welsh – enjoyed our conversation immensely.

Now the question – who wasn’t there? After all the bluster – a no show was Tony Ditrio. Shame – that was your shot. Also – while the DTC was out in force, and key GOP members came to play – no Mayor. Perhaps Harry was busy collecting the Christmas wish lists of our apartment building, campaign contributing, FU Norwalk developers (except apparently Jason Milligan). Priorities.

Wishing all the Non board members, contributors, and readers a fine few months. See you soon.
