Norwalk church offers a New Year’s prayer

“Old stuff” is thrown into the flames at Norwalk’s St. Paul’s Church on the Green Monday, to make way for the new stuff of 2013.

By Nancy Guenther Chapman

NORWALK, Conn. – More than 100 people gathered at St. Paul’s on the Green Monday in Norwalk for a burning bowl ceremony. The idea was to “let go of negative feelings, beliefs, fears, hurts, disappointments and burdens of the mind and heart, to embrace new beginnings,” by writing the old stuff on a paper and throwing it into a fire.

Before that, they said this prayer:

Gracious God, please give me

a few friends who understand me and remain my friends

a work to do that has real value

without which the world would be poorer

a mind unafraid to travel, even though the trail be not blazed

an understanding heart

a sense of humor

time for quiet, silent meditation

a feeling of the presence of God

the patience to wait for the coming of these things

with the wisdom to recognize them when they come

Happy New Year, everybody.
