NORWALK, Conn. – Norwalk Democratic mayoral candidates Matt Miklave, Harry Rilling, Vinny Mangiacopra and Andy Garfunkel answer this question posed by Norwalk Democratic Town Committee member Brenda Penn Williams, “What are your plans to include minorities in your administration?”
Hogwash. We should hire the best regardless of race. Instead we often hire to keep some sort of racial basis and often the result is hireing less than optimal workers to balance the racial mix. Rilling said it himself. There were no openings for Sergents so they just gave people promotions anyway because they worked hard in HIS opinion. Its hard to say we are not being racist if we actively look for people based on race. Ignoring race is the only way to not be discriminatory.
How can the DTC and its candidate for Mayor speak credibly on this issue, or ANY issue regarding minorities, when DTC District E leader Bill Krummel apparently committed a hate crime against Amanda Brown on City property and there have been no consequences?

How can we believe that any of the talk about helping minorities is sincere when the DTC holds its own leaders to a completely different standard than the rest of the community? What would be the response have been from the DTC if someone who wasn’t a DTC district leader yelled ugly racial slurs at Amanda Brown?
If that question is some sort of a diversity litmus test then the whole town committee flunks. Why aren’t they giving a minority candidate the opportunity to run for mayor? Instead they put up four white guys. More hypocrisy.

The absence of any of the 4 candidates from the BOE meeting announcing the appointment of the City’s first ever Hispanic Supt speaks volumes as does the disapproval of the two BOE members from the African and Hispanic communities. It’s a long road ahead. But boy this is a day to celebrate !

I know Mr. Miklave was at the council meeting. I don’t know where the other three were.
Mayor Moccia was also next door at the council meeting. He did not put in an appearance to welcome the new superintendent.
It should be noted that the BOE meeting and a Common Council meeting were scheduled at the same time. Mr. Miklave should be forgiven for not choosing a political moment over the City’s business. Presumably he was attending the Common Council meeting. Presumably, the Council will have more than one opportunity to meet Mr. Rivera and he will have ample time to work with him as a Councilman.
Well Nancy the drums of welcome for the new Supt. seem pretty muffled. Maybe it’s the summer heat. But the potential for a literal rebirth of our public school system really merits celebration.Especially by all our elected officials.
