Norwalk Health Department Hosts Radon Test Kit Giveaway for National Radon Action Month

NORWALK, Conn. — January is National Radon Action Month, and the Norwalk Health Department is encouraging residents to learn more about radon, a leading cause of lung cancer, and to test their homes for this invisible threat.

In partnership with the Connecticut Department of Public Health (CT DPH), the Health Department will hold a radon test kit giveaway for Norwalk residents. Free kits will be available on Thursday, Jan. 16, and Thursday, Jan. 23, 2025, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Health Department’s lobby at 137 East Avenue, Norwalk, CT 06851. Each household is eligible for one kit while supplies last. Participants must provide their contact information to receive follow-up radon information and reminders to use the kit.

Why Test for Radon?

Radon is a radioactive, odorless, tasteless gas that is naturally released from soil, rock, and water due to the breakdown of uranium. It can seep into homes through cracks and openings in the foundation. Long-term exposure to high radon levels is the leading cause of lung cancer in non-smokers, and smokers face an even greater risk when exposed to radon.

Radon levels can vary greatly across Connecticut and even between neighboring homes. Testing is the only way to know if your home has elevated radon levels. Testing is simple and involves placing a small device in your home for at least 48 hours and then sending it to a laboratory for analysis.

What to Do if Radon Levels Are High

If your home’s radon levels are measured at 4 pCi/L or higher, CT DPH recommends hiring a trained professional to lower the levels. Mitigation techniques, including ventilation and depressurization systems, typically cost between $1,200 and $1,500.
