NORWALK, Conn. – An association of Norwalk neighbors and concerned citizens has been formed to study the Manresa Island issue and advocate for a positive end result to the closing of the nearly 60-year-old power plant there.

Charlie Taney, chairman of the Manresa Neighborhoods Association (MNA), said the first objective is to understand the issues.

“There is so much to know, so many issues,” he said. “Before you can start talking about what you might want down there you have to really understand what are the facts … We are spending a lot of time just trying to really understand what the facts are.”

MNA held its first meeting in October and meets monthly. Five neighborhood associations have voted to join, with 416 households represented, Taney said. The neighborhoods include Harbor Shores, Harbor View, Shore Front Park, Wilson Point and Village Creek. The Norwalk Yacht Club has voted to join, and other neighborhoods are voting on it, he said.

Taney lives in Village Creek, which was recently added to the National Register of Historic Places. Any change to Manresa Island would therefore have to be evaluated by the federal government for its impact to Village Creek, Taney said.

“There are all kinds of things that come into play here. It’s really amazing,” he said.

Each neighborhood association gets one vote at MRA meetings. Any association is welcome to join, and would assign two delegates to attend meetings.
