Norwalk tax payment deadline Monday, Feb. 1



NORWALK, Conn. – Norwalk taxpayers have until Monday, Feb. 1, to pay their property tax bills for real estate, motor vehicle, and business personal property taxes, and sewer use charges, without interest penalty, according to a press release from City Hall. These bills were due Jan. 1, and reflect the second installment of charges due on the grand list of Oct. 1, 2014.

Office hours at city hall are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Taxpayers are encouraged to pay by mail. Payments postmarked by the U.S. Postal Service on or before Feb. 1 are timely regardless of when they are received by the tax office.

Taxpayers may also pay taxes at Norwalk bank branch locations of the following banks: Patriot National Bank; Webster Bank; TD Bank; Norwalk Bank and Trust; and Fairfield County Bank. There is no charge for the service of paying at the bank, and the taxpayer does not need to be a customer of the bank in order to walk in and pay there, but he or she must bring a current tax bill.

Taxpayers may pay on line with their credit card or by ACH payment (“E Check”) by visiting the City of Norwalk’s web site and clicking the ‘Online Payments / Tax Bill Lookup” link. The fee for paying with an “E Check” is $1.50.   Taxpayers may also call toll free 866-974-8090, and pay over the telephone using their credit or debit card. Credit, debit, and ATM cards may also be used to pay in person at City Hall.

Interest on late payments will be charged at the rate of 3 percent beginning on Tuesday, Feb. 2. This represents 1.5 percent per month for two months, January and February. This rate will remain the same throughout February.

Taxpayers who are unsure about what they may owe may look up their taxes on line by accessing the “Online Payments / Tax Bill Lookup” feature at the city website, or come into the Tax Collector’s office for more information. Failure to have received a tax bill does NOT exempt the taxpayer from interest charges. Interest is charged on all late payments, with absolutely no exception.
