NORWALK, Conn. – There will be a gathering Sunday in Norwalk to “mourn the senseless loss” of children, teachers and administrators in a Friday morning shooting in Newtown, a release from the Human Relations and Fair Rent Department said.
Everyone is welcome at the vigil to be held at 3 p.m. Sunday in the community room at City Hall, the release said.
A lone gunman shot 20 children ages 5- to 10-years-old and six adults at about 9:30 a.m. in a Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, according to news reports.
Norwalk schoolchildren were kept inside Friday as a precaution, Board of Education Vice Chairman Artie Kassimiss said in a Tweet. Norwalk Police officers were dispatched to area schools, Chief Thomas Kulhawik said in a Tweet.
The gunman committed suicide at the scene, news reports say. Although there were early reports that there may have been another suspect at large, police now say he was the only one.
Correction made, Dec. 15
