Opinion: Honoring NHS senior Patrick Ruther

The Norwalk Board of Education is pleased to spotlight Norwalk High School Senior Patrick Ruther for his commitment to his community and country. Patrick is an exceptional student who sets high standards for himself and possesses the skills and strong work ethic to achieve them.

Patrick is a member of the National Honor Society and a leader in Bears Beating Cancer. He is also captain of the boys’ varsity lacrosse team, and plays the violin in the orchestra. He is also an active member of his church.

This week, Patrick will receive the Norwalk High School Citizenship and Service Award. Created specifically for him, this award recognizes a student who aspires to serve his country, and who has made a significant impact on his community.

Last summer, Patrick began his training with the Connecticut Army National Guard. He learned the “Distinguished Honor Graduate Award,” and received an army achievement medal to recognize this accomplishment. According to Sgt. First Class Felix Guiffra, Patrick leads by example with a quiet confidence and determination in all that he does.

Next year, Patrick will attend the United States Military Academy Preparatory School, known as West Point Prep. West Point Prep is an extremely competitive program that prepares candidates for the academic, physical, and military challenges of the United States Military Academy at West Point.

The Board of Education is pleased to honor Patrick for his persistence, commitment, hard work and dedication. We wish you the best of luck at West Point Prep.
