NORWALK, Conn. – America now knows what Norwalk has been aware of for decades – the Christmas light display at Rick and Joan Setti’s house at 6 Midwood Road is the best of the best.

Now they have a trophy to show for it, an exaggerated Christmas bulb. It was presented to them by Sabrina Soto of HGTV , after she declared them the winners of ABC’s Great Christmas Light Fight in a show that aired Monday night, the finale of this year’s season. They are also expecting a fat check, as a $50,000 prize is coming their way.

“I went off the wall,” Rick Setti said of the moment he learned they had won, on Nov. 7. “Joanie, she was crying. It was something.”

The show featured Soto wiping away tears the first time she saw the Setti’s display light up, which she said was “magical.” Producers of the show said it was the first time a Christmas light display had made her cry, Joan Setti said.

The Settis were entered into the competition without their knowledge by someone who came to their house last year, they said. They got a phone call three days after last Christmas, asking them if they’d like to participate in the second year of the ABC competition, they said.

It’s been a long journey since then. The pair had been planning to be semi-retired this year but instead threw themselves into their work with the same full time gusto for pleasing children that they have shown for 26 years. This in spite of some health problems, including Rick Setti’s knee problems.

They got through it with a lot of help, they said. But the stamina to get through a marathon filming is all theirs. The couple said that the first time the film crew arrived, they started shooting at 1:30 p.m. on a Friday and finished at 4:30 a.m. Saturday. Even when the crew came back to tell them they won, the shooting went on for another two hours, they said.

This is the last year the Setti’s are putting on Setti’s Christmas Village. “It’s a nice way to go out. It’s an honor. It really is,” Rick Setti said.

They don’t have the check yet but the money is “spent,” he said. Joan Setti is finally going to replace her 50-year old oven and all the other kitchen appliances, he said. He said he’d be replacing his 10-year-old computer.

Soto said in the show that it was a tough decision. She stayed up all night pondering it, she said. The Settis won by one point, she said.

“The competition was incredible,” Soto said to the couple. “What set you apart from the rest of the displays was that you made every nook and cranny just by yourselves, and painting everything. There are so many kids that were inspired by this that they are going to do this at their own homes.”

Correction, 1:47 p.m.: Key was awarded by the mayor.

That explains why they continued one more year after planning to retire after last season. A fitting finish for a long time effort and it couldn’t happen to nicer people.

Mr. & Mrs. Santa all that hard work paid off! 50 thousand doesn’t even come close to the many kids you made happy over the years. Merry Christmas

  7. What a wonderful treat for the holiday season….an award well deserved.

The Settis are part of the fabric that make Norwalk great. There was a lot of competition, but the difference was the totally home/heart felt making of everything.

The shots of the Setti displays from up high were amazing…. it is a really large happening!!

    Emma loves it.

Congratulations to the Setti’s on their well deserved recognition. They have brought smiles to Norwalkers for years. I, for one, will be sending them a small monetary token in appreciation of their labor of love. Maybe some others will do the same.

Awesome! I saw it for the first time late Sunday night by myself after most everyone went home, around 9:15, and on that longest and darkest day of the year when I needed a boost, the Setti’s front yard was there to provide it in all its fabulous glory! Congratulations, and thank you.
