South Norwalk takes in free fun, animal show

NORWALK, Conn. – Squeals of laughter pealed out of the far end of Ryan Park at the 3rd annual community day hosted Saturday by A Better South Norwalk.

Burgers and basketball were the order of the day closer to Raymond Street, which was lined with cars. Politicians mingled with the abundant crowd – hundreds of people were there – and a bounce house out in the field drew children as well.

There to greet the crowd were members of the League of Women Voters, Democrats handing out  “Vote Democrat” stickers and a snake with a blue tongue.

The latter was part of the show given by Curious Creatures of Branford in the corner next to the playground made out of old tires. Also getting shrieks were a lizard that can mimic a snake by pulling his legs in because his neck is almost as wide as its head, and a lizard that leaped from the animal handler’s hand to the shoulder of a child willing to serve as a perch. That lizard also had another neat trick – pads on its feet that allowed it to hang upside down off its handler’s hand.
A chinchilla was provided so everyone could see how soft its fur was and a baby porcupine at first provided a scary thrill for the kids but then relaxed, allowing them to pat it and see that it was fine. There was a tortoise said to live to be 200 years old and a ferret that provided brief entertainment by opening its mouth when stimulated.

The repeated questions about what was in the big container were ignored until the finale of the show – the appearance of a baby alligator. His mouth was promptly taped shut so the kids could get near him without getting snapped at.

South Norwalk Community Day was cosponsored by General Growth Properties (GGP), Trinity Financial, the South Norwalk Community Center, Spinnaker Real Estate, and the Norwalk Redevelopment Agency. The event partners included Serving All Vessels Equally (SAVE) and the Norwalk Democratic Town Committee.

A Better South Norwalk members include: Councilman Travis Simms, Sandra Stokes, Ernie Dumas, Councilwoman Faye Bowman, Nabil Valencia, and Martha Dumas.
