NORWALK, Conn. – Toys meant to be given to children through the Toys for Tots charity were stolen from Norwalk City Hall Tuesday, and Republican Registrar of Voters Karen Doyle Lyons said she identified two suspects while studying surveillance video tape Wednesday afternoon.
Norwalk Police had not yet arrived to view the video.
The box containing the toys was sitting in the hallway outside the registrars’ office. Lyons’ video shows two young women peeking into the box, removing items and then walking down the hall. One woman put something in her backpack while the other carried what appeared to be board games in front of her.
“If they had asked I would have taken their names and had the Marines give them something,” Lyons said. “Now we’re down to nothing.”
Toys for Tots is a charity run by the U.S. Marines.
The box has been moved inside the registrars’ office. Lyons is looking for new unwrapped toys. They will be collected on Thursday, Dec. 17.
“It really hurts to the core,” Lyons said. “Dan Caporale and Pete Havens work very hard to collect toys for children.”
