Lockwood-Mathews Mansion to Reopen June 4 Following $18 Million Restoration

NORWALK, Conn. — The Lockwood-Mathews Mansion will reopen to the public on June 4 following a multi-year, $18 million restoration project aimed at preserving the historic landmark and expanding public access. A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held on May 27 to celebrate the completion of the work.

The renovation, more than two decades in planning, upgraded the 160-year-old mansion’s infrastructure with central heating, modern electrical systems, fire suppression, and ADA-compliant features, including an elevator and public restrooms. Previously, the building was only partially open during the year due to inadequate utilities.

“This was a dream that started around 2005, and it’s taken many years, many steps, and the support of the city, the state, and the community to get here,” said project chair Patsy Brescia.

The mansion, owned by the City of Norwalk and operated as a museum for nearly 60 years, underwent extensive improvements under the guidance of David Scott Parker Architects and construction manager Robert Covello. Leaders credited the restoration’s success to collaboration between local government, private donors, volunteers, and preservation specialists.

Senator Bob Duff and Congressman Jim Himes were among those who spoke at the reopening ceremony, emphasizing the mansion’s value to Norwalk residents and students. “Understanding our history is critical,” Himes said. “You can read it in a book, but when a child walks in here and says ‘wow,’ that’s how you spark curiosity.”

The restoration also included lighting upgrades to simulate the original gas fixtures and preservation of architectural details, such as the multi-story lay light above the grand staircase.

Beyond its historical significance, the mansion has also served as a filming location. Paramount Pictures used the mansion for the 2004 remake of The Stepford Wives. The mansion was also featured in the 1970 gothic horror film House of Dark Shadows.
