NORWALK, Conn. — The city is marking National Preparedness Month this September with an open house event and reminders for residents to get ready for emergencies.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency created National Preparedness Month. This year’s theme is “Americans Stand Ready.”
Touch-A-Truck event set for Sept. 19
Norwalk will hold a Touch-A-Truck and Open House on Sept. 19 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Public Works Operations Center, 15 South Smith St.
Families can meet firefighters, police officers, emergency medical workers and other city staff. Kids can climb into emergency vehicles, join hands-on activities and enjoy free food.
Tips for staying safe
The city is asking residents to take a few steps to prepare for disasters:
- Make a family emergency plan and practice it together. A planning guide is available at ready.gov/plan.
- Build a supply kit with food, water, flashlights, batteries and a first aid kit. Checklists are at ready.gov/kit.
- Sign up for emergency alerts from the city and the National Weather Service at norwalkct.gov/62/Emergency-Alert.
- Share safety information with neighbors, especially those who may need extra help during an emergency.
Volunteers needed
The Norwalk Health Department is also looking for volunteers to join its Emergency Response Team. Members help distribute medicine during health emergencies and share health information with the community. No medical background is required, and training is provided.
